A small background and context- I am an Electrical engineering student at one of Europe’s top universities.
However, I do sometimes feel I am not getting what I deserve. But what do I really deserve? Maybe being spoon-fed by my professors, more input from the so called phD holders and most important of all, advice, quality advice!!!
But no, I don’t get any of those, at least not at the right amount. I realize I do most of the feeding ,I advice myself and even look for my professors to affirm myself-I recently learnt I should affirm myself more.
However , that doesn’t really matter, until it comes to the bare minima- LECTURES!
We all agree that universally, lectures suck, or if I want to dignify it , I’d call it ‘'boring’. However, as I have come to discover a dangerous pattern, sometimes boring comes from a different problem-when either or both parties have little or no idea of what is really happening(lack content).
I don’t mean to be harsh ,but in my situation-both me and my professor are boring; and allow me to explain -I’ll be quick. I promise.
My part- I don’t ask questions. Not because I don’t have questions-believe me, I have a lot ,including some not related to this universe. The thing is; sometimes you just don’t see the point. Or other times hunger is about to subdue you- so to avoid an extra minute in class, you stay put.
Professor’s part- It’s even tougher to speak for them, maybe I should email him to explain why he be boring. I understand they do their best to pass knowledge to us , but maybe there are better ways. Again, there comes a situation where teaching methods are so lame, that you just drift off to wonderland.
Anyway, my point here is I think both parties should pull up their socks to provide an optimum medium where content delivery is flawless. Some of the methods are outlined below (Only works for me though).
Scrap lectures-and replace them with discussion & lab practices
Professors should develop a more personal interest in their students
Remove (or reduce ) barriers to research & thesis preparation
Shorten (if they can’t be scrapped totally) lecture hours-2+ hours is inhuman
Well, there are other methods but I think the above do the job for me.
